LOCAL ASPARAGUS VARIETY

We started planting asparagus in 2020 and now have just under an acre, enough to keep us busy!

We have one variety, Guelph Millennium, developed in Ontario by local farmers and the University of Guelph.  Millennium is a winter hardy, high-yielding and top-quality variety, suitable for both organic and conventional production.

PROJECT CHALLENGES

Our asparagus patch is still young, so it has not reached full production yet.  We expect to have about 3 weeks of harvest this year, starting in the second week of May.  Next year it will be more like 5-6 weeks, and after that, we should have a 6-8 week season every year.

FOR THE LONG RUN

Asparagus takes 2-3 years to get established before it really starts producing. We will likely get 1-2 weeks of light production next year and should be in more full production by 2022, for wholesale and retail. Looking forward to learning more about it and eating more of it too!

Millennium Asparagus

We love asparagus, as it is the first outdoor vegetable to be seasonally available in Ontario.  Grilled, steamed, boiled, roasted, sauteed, souped or pickled, you can’t beat fresh asparagus!
